California Watchable Wildlife Viewing Site Photo Winner 2023

Every spring, we get little bursts of wild iris blooms along the American River Parkway. I'd been watching this little sheltered area for a couple of weeks, hoping for the right subject to show up and show off the beautiful blooms. It was a steep hike down the bluff to this area, and I'd been checking it almost every morning. The blooms were just beginning to fade; they would be gone soon! I'd already hiked down and back up once that morning and was thinking of heading home. Then I thought I'd do the hike down the bluff one more time - with a hot week coming up, the irises would soon be gone for the year.

As I approached the area, I heard that unmistakable call of the Great Blue Heron, my favorite bird! He flew into this sheltered pond area, and landed on the opposite side from the irises. I decided to settle in under a bush and wait and see. The reflections were beautiful that morning, now all I needed was the heron to circumnavigate the pond and pose for me in the right spot!

Wild animals don't always cooperate, but this morning, finally, I got my shots - he walked slowly, hunting the edges of the pond. And when he got to the irises, I took half-a-dozen shots of the heron wading through the reflected irises searching for breakfast. Then I hiked back up the bluffs and rushed home to download the photos! Isn't Nature amazing!?!?!

Even before I downloaded the photos, I knew I would submit one of these photos to the California Watchable Wildlife photo contest. As a wildlife rescuer and photographer, this publication has always been special - it focuses on our state's native wildlife. Their annual photo contest is specific to our native wildlife, animals you can photograph in your own community! It is an honor to be recognized by the publication, knowing that our photos are displayed in Sacramento, and that we are sharing a little bit of the beauty of our natural world with the public.
